VISUAL MERCHANDISING_

VISUAL DAYS_

I had the opportunity to work along side the visuals to help them rematch/re-merchandise the divided floor of H&M. The visuals at the store are very talented and were very helpful and supportive, as I was rather nervous as I was totally out of my depth. Now I realised this wasn't an easy job, but I didn't realise the amount of work that went into it to make the store shop-able and attractive. I grasped the idea of outfit building quite quickly, usually starting with a top, shirt, jumper, trousers/skirt, jacket and or dress, to give people an idea of how to style and put together their garments. With the front facing garments, it was usually a large quantity or an item that would sell well. I got a bit caught up with the front dressing and making the garments look ‘pretty’ which perhaps wasn't necessary. There was also fitting in biggest selling orders in an already tight space, and there was certainly a lot of leopard print which was hard to fit in anywhere. As this was the biggest selling department on divided, this had to be the most precise, and go exactly by the handbook.

On the second day I had a department to match by myself- the dreaded divided grey. It was completely un shop-able, the clothes were mixed and it just didn't look appealing. Im not suggesting I turned the department around, but I feel it was a positive outcome. As grey didn't have any mannequins, to suggest outfits, I layered up key pieces, put accessories on to make customers see how they could style from the department.

It was a really good insight to work full days alongside the visuals to get a feel for the job role. Even if this isn't the career path I choose to take, it is still very valuable experience to have, especially within a similar industry.
