THEA PORTER_ Exhibition

THEA PORTER_ 70s Bohemian chic

In response to my 70s theme, I decided to visit the Thea Porter exhibition to gain further information (it was a very conveniently timed exhibition). I wasn’t particularly interested in the bohemian, festival, hippy theme that is at the height of fashion right now, but the exhibition gave me an idea of garment shape and pattern ideas.
Having never been to the Fashion and textiles museum before, I was swayed by peoples opinions. It was apparently a small venue (I can confirm upon visiting it is), so I was skeptical at the effect of the exhibition. But I was rather impressed, and felt it was set out very well considering the size. It was very informative about her career through the years, with photos and sketchbook work to support this. As you walked through the different spaces, pars lit up to draw you round the room, and as I was the only one in there I was a little scared- I didn't know what was coming!

The garments themselves were presented in a way almost based on colour palettes, which I rather enjoyed. It went from rich reds and browns to bold, playful colours, also touching on creams and whites suggesting a more elegant look. Most of the garments were that of a flowing nature, with wrap arounds- depicting the 70s trend to a T. What really inspired me from the exhibition was the pattern. The were bold and large scale, featuring everything typically 70s, rowdy florals and stripes, clashing colours. it definitely gave me a greater knowledge of the era I was looking at, and refined my research- gave me more of a direction.
