SONIA DELAUNAY_
Sonia Delaunay exhibition at the Museum of Modern art in Paris (Musee D’art Moderne)
Les Couleurs de l’abstraction
Before visiting this exhibition, I didn't have much knowledge of Delaunay. So it was a great shock to learn about the masses of work she produced, throughout all areas of the visual arts.
Her true passion was painting, and her journey started when she created a patchwork quilt for her new born son (1913). It was made up of different geometric shapes, and this fuelled her desire for colour.
It was clear throughout the exhibition that Delaunay was very expressive, and the way she applied paint and the scale of her paintings perhaps depicted her feelings. A personal favourite of mine was the ‘Bal Bullier’ a wild, energetic painting of the ballroom in Paris. It was such a large painting, and the shapes and colours twisted together, almost suggesting the movement of the people.
For me, the textiles on display were just as impressive, although she only took up textiles and design because it made money in her time of need. But this fine barrier between her paintings and textiles again suggests the relationship between fashion and art.
The only point that was a disappointment was where the exhibition was displayed. It didn't flow with Delaunay’s work, it could have been set out a lot more thoughtfully. It was dingy, and perhaps this was to attract the viewer more to the work, but I feel this was more of a distraction. Tying in colours or having it in a completely white room would have been more effective
