My friend needed a model, she asked me (obviously). I went along to her uni on the day of her hand in, to wear the shirt for her tutors to see. Holly was very nervous, making me slightly uneasy- she had told me these crits were horrendous. And she wasn't joking. After sitting in a daunting, emotionless room for 20 mins, the tutors or ‘judges’ as they so seemed turned up. They sat at a panel, with a camera above students work so the rest of the class could see. One by one, the students would go to the table and present their work, and the tutors would say exactly how they felt about it. Mostly ripping it to shreds. None of the comments I felt were constructive, it was almost as if they wanted to make the student feel as bad as possible. It created an awkward atmosphere, but I could see why they doing so. Most of the students (bar Holly) hadn't produced a good body of work, finished their garments, and really didn't have the right mindset to complete this course. It surprised me at how un-motivated to do well they were- and they were the ones that actually bothered to turn up. It made me see how incredibly well run and positive my course is, and how supportive the tutors are for you to do well.
